BRIAN SANFORD BORLAUG

ARTIST STATEMENT
My work explores a relationship with my family and country’s collective past, a past that is illusive and familiar, documented yet unknown.  I appropriate both unfamiliar and iconic photographs, of both family members and infamous political figures, to relay the ephemeral quality of memory while commenting on the mythological nature of our telling of history.

Shot, Drawn, Printed approaches the iconographic and the sentimental, the propagandistic and the personal, while deconstructing various modes of historical representation.  The tension between these separate but related approaches is introduced through a juxtaposing of personal family portraits with memorable images and descriptions of political history. From the original photograph, to the stylized drawing, to the reversed printed image, I aim to express the dissonance that exists between an event and its documentation.
